You have probably heard a lot about popular company vision statements, but have you ever thought about having a vision statement for yourself? What is it that you're wishing your life to be? What are the core values of life that you believe in? Your personal vision statement is a one-line answer to these questions that can guide you throughout your life.
To put it as a definition:
Your personal vision statement guides your life and provides the direction necessary to chart the course of your days and the choices you make about your career, life, and family.
So how to come up with a personal vision statement?
Ask yourself these questions to write your personal vision statement
What do you stand for?
What do you want to be when you grow up?
What do you really like to do?
If you never had to work another day in your life, how would you spend your time instead of working?
When your life is ending, what will you regret not doing, seeing, or achieving?
What strengths of yours have other people commented on, and how have the strengths and comments affected your accomplishments?
What strengths do you see in yourself?
List down some of your core values
There are many values that you may believe in, or you would want to follow in your life, but fix the top three values that you feel are your core values. List down the values and prioritise them. Keep these in mind to define your vision statement.
Examples- Acceptance, bravery, family, friendship, fun, quality, respect, responsibility, wealth, etc
Create a statement-
Come up with a small paragraph based on the answers and values listed above. Include what you want to become, what you want to accomplish in your life and through what values you're wishing to achieve it. Later compress them so that it can come to a paragraph of 2 or 3 lines.
"To be a teacher. And to be known for inspiring my students to be more than they thought they could be."
"To have fun in my journey through life and learn from my mistakes."
"To be a good husband, father, and co-worker, and it is my goal to help people achieve their goals by helping, mentoring, and sharing my knowledge. I work hard, put others first, and listen before I speak".
These are just examples, but you can make it in whichever way you want, however, keep it simple and easy to remember.
Write and read it every day
Write your vision statement on a piece of paper or a note and stick on a place where you would look at it very often. Read it out loud in the morning after you wake up every single day. This statement must be tattooed to your brain and must never get erased.
Creating a personal vision statement is not an easy task and needs a lot of time to think carefully and decide on it. But once you do this, never change it and read it out every day. You will see significant changes in your life and will find meaning for your life. It will help you not compare yourself to anyone, but be honest with yourself and work towards achieving your goal every single day!
